2월은 초중고 학교에서 흑인 문화와 역사를 배우는 달입니다.  미국 전체 인구의 15%가 되는 흑인들이 미국 역사에 공헌한 점들을 다문화 교육의 일환으로 배우고 있습니다. 흑인 문화는 모든 인종의 학생들이 다문화 교육으로 배워야 한다고 생각합니다.  

로스 앤젤스 타임즈에서 신문을 사용한 블랙 히스토리 액티비티(newspaper-based activities)를 수년 전 각 초중고 학교교사들을 위해 레슨 플랜을 준비해서 나누어 주었던 적이 있었고, 수년전에는 코카콜라 회사도 뉴욕 타임즈에 흑인 역사의 달(Black History Month)을 서포트한다고 큰 광고를 낸 것을 보았습니다.  

L. A. Jazz Society(L. A. 재즈음악 협회)가  옛날 제학교에 와서 학생들에게 재즈음악 공연을 벌써 선보여 주었고, 어느해에는 미국 역사에 공헌한 각계각층의 흑인들에 대하여 학생들이 배우는 기회가 있습니다. 각 분야별로  몇몇 사람들을 꼽아보면, 

교육계: Mary McLeod Bethune, Booker T. Washington, William E. B. Dubois 

정부. 법조계: Thurgood Marshall, Colin Powell, Ralph Bunch

사회개혁 및 민권운동가: Harriet Tubman, Rosa Park, Martin Luther King, Jr.

발명가 및 탐험가: George W. Carver, Granville T. Woods, Matthew Henson

텔러비젼(TV): Oprah Winfrey

음악: Louis Armstrong, Stevie Wonder,  Whitney Houston

의학: Charles Drew, Daniel Hale Williams

문학: Langston Hughes, Toni Morrison

인터테인먼트(Entertainment): Michael Jackson, Samy Davis, Jr. 

학생들에게 자신이 좋아하는 유명한 흑인 한 사람을 선택해서 리서취 페이퍼를 써보라고 할 수 있겠습니다.  또한 개인이 아닌 흑인 전체그룹이 미국의 체육, 음악, 미국의 민권운동 등에 공헌한 점을 미국역사의 한 부분으로 배울 수 있습니다.  

제가 일했던 학교가 위치한 Hancock Park 동네의 유명한 건축가 Paul Williams의 친척이 몇년전 제 학교에 와서 지금은 작고한 Paul Williams가 지은 유명한 저택들과 건물들을 소개한 적이 있습니다. 또 유명한 흑인 음악가인 냇 킹 콜((Nat King Cole)의 딸 Natalie Cole이 예전에 자신이 저희 학교를 다녔다며 학교 동창생으로서 학교에 도네이션을 한 적이 있습니다.  

미국 내 동양인들의 문화는 5월에 동양계 미국인 문화의 달(Asian-American Heritage Month)로 기념하지만 솔직히 5월에는 학생들이 시험을 많이 치는 테스팅 기간 때문에 5월 5일 멕시코 축제인 싱코‧ 데‧ 마요(Cinco de Mayo)와 합치거나 테스팅 시작 전이나 끝난 후 겨우 스케쥴에 넣도록 노력합니다.  

정치, 교육, 법조계, 사회개혁, 비즈니스, 문학, 의학, 군사, 음악, 과학, 스포츠, 테크날러지, TV, 영화, 미술, 등등의 다양한 분야에서 미국 주류사회에 공헌한  한국계 미국인들(Korean-Americans)에 대해서도 미국 학교 모든 인종의 초중고 학생들이 배우게 될 날을 희망하며 African-American Heritage Month에 저의 생각을 나누어봅니다.   

소위 “흑인들의 애국가(National Anthem of African-Americans)” 라고 일컬어지는 

“Lift Every Voice and Sing”이라는 노래의 가사를 소개합니다.  

Lift every voice and sing, 

'Til earth and heaven ring, 

Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; 

Let our rejoicing rise 

High as the listening skies, 

Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
